Context
Background
The CSHI was created and is led by Zoongizi Ode (zoongiziode.ca), an Indigenous-led non-profit organization, in response to the need for more empathetic and trauma-informed approaches to security in places like libraries, shelters, and government service offices. The program seeks to address barriers to accessing essential services for marginalized people by training and employing individuals with lived experience as Community Safety Hosts (CSH). These hosts provide a welcoming presence, offer resources and guidance, and act as a point of contact for individuals who may be in crisis.
As a social enterprise, Persons Community Solutions (PCS) is the operational partner of the CSHI, providing the employment component of the program. PCS is committed to ensuring liveable wages, a supportive work environment, and opportunities for growth for all employees. The CSHI prioritizes candidates who are Indigenous, have aged out of care, have prior involvement in complex systems, or live in the North End of Winnipeg.
CSH are working throughout Winnipeg’s Inner city in public libraries, community health and ACCESS centers, transitional housing and specialized support shelters. They tend to work in teams with other CSH depending on the size of the site, or on rare occasions alone but alongside facility staff.
